Mentoring in Michigan

January 1, 2012 § Leave a comment

This email string is a poignant reminder of the power of mentoring, even late in life:

From a reader named Lynn:

I am the fleet captain at a small lake in Michigan. Our sailing program was started in 1942, but we are in big trouble now as the number of sailor’s dwindle. I just finished your book and presented many of your ideas at our Feb. Sailor’s meeting. this summer we have all agreed to dedicated Tuesday to the teaching of sailing….good weather out on the water, stormy weather in the class room.

I especially agree with your mentoring emphasis…for my brother and I it was our Dad….and although we are now nearly 60 we had such great pride last year when in high wind we executed a flawless jibe tack around the mark in front of the club house and our Dad was there to see it.  : )

My reply:

Thank you Lynn, for the lovely note. A great way to start the day.

I’m just returning from a summit of small inland lake clubs that are working on teaching and mentoring programs. About 100 people met in Nashville over the weekend to share ideas and best practices. Here is a clip of a small part of my talk at the conference, specifically zeroing in on why mentoring is so important:

I wonder if you would mind if I stripped personal details and posted your email to my own blog? I love the story of your jibe tack!

More about the jibe-tack:

Yes, please do send along the conference notes from the Nashville meeting. That sounded like a great event! I’m sorry I didn’t know about it ahead of time.

Please use any of my last letter for your blog site. That jibe tack story is a very fond memory of mine mostly because as I retook my seat in the boat and glanced back up at the clubhouse, there my 83 year old sailor dad waving like crazy and I knew he was proud of what he had taught my brother and I and even my captain/brother had that same grin on his face. All three of us understood perfectly in that moment the bond we had.

Wishing you smooth sailing.

Keep the adventure alive, Lynn. Thanks for your email.
